I remember reading up on the HCCI engine concept in 2003, I think, though that wasn’t the well-known nomenclature yet.

And HCCI engines have technically existed for many decades - there are “diesel” model airplane engines that are actually HCCI.

Some fly by wire throttle cars have a mode in which the throttle remains open while rpm is controlled via fuel. If I remember correctly this is to reduce pumping losses, probably increases mileage by running very lean
